about

Off-kilter techno from a low-key master.

Ryogo Yamamori is a quietly brilliant producer with an aptitude for bringing in unconventional elements without disturbing the flow of the track. Take "Drumedge," from his latest EP, Shelter From The Rain. It's a whirl of hypnotic, almost psychedelic hand percussion, but Yamamori never loses sight of the central, all-powerful thud (it reminds me of Donato Dozzy in that regard). But the title track is the choice cut for me, with its big, honking bass sweeps, halfway between a Reese bassline and someone gingerly ripping off a velcro strap. It has all the elements of a big room banger, but Yamamori holds it at a restrained, almost motorik pace, making even this heavy techno sound meditative, almost peaceful.
